    Three "FACTS" You Should Know

Fact #1:  High membership numbers protect against threats to employee welfare.  Management regularly receives a report of union membership statistics (no names).  Anecdotal evidence indicates a relationship between increased numbers of grievances in locals where membership numbers are low.  Every member is a crucial muscle of strength to the local body of members!

Fact #2:  Though federal law mandates that AFGE represent all employees of DCMA, AFGE is NOT mandated to cover costs associated with defending non-members involved in costly, crucial labor disputes.  However, dues-paying, "full members" are entitled to multiple, free, legal consultations provided by union lawyers.  You prudently purchase life and home insurance; union membership is a way of "insuring" protection against potential, future career threats.

Fact #3:  Low membership means that you and your coworkers may not be able to fully engage a proper fight when the time comes to fight.  Employee defense costs are paid through local membership dues.  If you don’t become a dues-paying union member, you could be preventing or hindering your own, future, legal defense because there may not be adequate money available to fight your fight all the way.  When a local president is short of defense funds, due to low, local membership participation, that president is forced to pick and choose which fights to fight.  Some Locals simply do not have enough money to fight every fight through because of lacking defense funds in that Local.  It’s purely a matter of practicality.  If a Local has high membership enrollment, it stands to reason that their available funds, through dues, are ready to be used to fight the necessary, fight for you.  Can you be sure that you’ll never need that defense money to defend yourself?  Can you be sure that your friends or family members won't need that defense money for their defense?  Bottom Line: your dues are a crucial, powerful resource of defense, and you should tell your fellow coworkers of this reality!
